Spiritual

As NRI  in USA leave the motherland for job opportunity, they remember the cultural values of  India and tend to cling onto the memories. Also, as the local culture in North America is little different, American Indians tend to become more conservative while trying to protect their own culture. Because of these reasons, the families who may never thought of sending their children for classical dance learning like Kuchipudi or Bharata Natyam or even classical music, had they stayed back in India, now they want their children to adapt to more of Indian culture in America.

To take a quick peak at the ancient Indian spirituality, what it seemed like 64 Kalalu introduced by Nataraju or from our lord shiva himself. The center of all 64 kalalu revolves around the "breath" flow in lungs, where, say a priest could be chanting manthras modulating breath flow in certain patterns , or  one could be dancing Bharatha Natyam using Mudras's with the fingers, or create powerful classical music with mouth or fingers,or quitely do Yoga Asanas. Please note that all of the above forms of  Kalalu involves breath and visible motion in the body. The core of some of these 64 Kalalu involves using the same breath flow without any motion in the body, such as "Pranayama" and "Meditation", where the person is deeply involved in observing the how our breath flow is directly connected food movement from one sheath to another in the human system. It is said that one can master breath flow to the extent of even leaving the body intentionally by declaring a date in advance, like lots of  Yogi's did in the past(most of the accomplished Yogis left without publicising their leaving for a bigger cause). What the masters are saying  is that every one the 7 billions people, irrespective of the culture and religion on planet has the same capability.

Though most of us may not understand the depths of ancient Indian Spiriturally around Vedas, temple building, Ayurvedam, Geeta, Yoga, vaastu,  we value them highly because of our tradition. The American NRI's are busy with work, taking care of their families, children's education and often may not find time to learn more about Indian Spirituality in little more detailed manner. We may have heard about temples, yoga, and  ayurvedam from childhood and probably take them for granted. For more than 10,000 years, most of the Indian generations had been exposed to Yoga and Ayurvedam as part of normal life. Even until 1960s, Yoga Asanas were taught and practiced as part of normal school system, and day-to-day living. For example, all Indians were using "Namaskaram" pose with two hands to greet some one, where as lately we switched to "shake hand". Most of the Indians used to eat by sitting on the floor in "padmasan", and lately we got switched to dining tables. Every mother in India had all Ayurvedam based medicinal approach for taking care of health of family members. Our last two generations since 1960s through 2012, lost touch with Yoga and Ayurvedam, because we had been exposed to the Western Societies and technology gadgets had kept us admiring the American inventions, and in that process, we lost the touch of Ayurvedam and  Yoga.

Let us take couple of minutes and look at the fundamental differences Eastern approach of Yoga and Ayurvedam vs. western approach of exercise and medicine.  The Western Medicine could appear like solving even non-infectious diseases by taking tablets and/or surgeries to solve the problem immediately, which could show up in different form or disease later, if we do not follow what doctors recommend/prescribe us the changes needed in our life style of eating, sleeping, exercising, etc.; where as  the eastern approach of Ayurvedam is more of wholistic approach, and healing is happening naturally by consuming the medicine in the form food (hence life style changes), created from the natural herbs without any side effects. Yoga always follows Ayurvedam/Siddha for taking care of one' s health in wholistic approach. The modern exercise in fitness centers involves moving body parts, what it appears like fat burning, muscle building and staying fit, where as the  eastern yoga is all about focusing on breath and observing the internal body parts consciously by following the Yoga Asana's as slowly as possible. It is extremely difficult for many to believe how a slow moving Yoga posture could convert more food into blood and burn more unnecessary fat, compared to the fast moving western exercises.  How, a slow moving Yoga is so powerful, can not be comprehended by logical mind or theory, where as one can quickly experience it with in matter couple of weeks of doing Yoga Asanas or following Ayurvedam techniques of consuming the same curry spices, like garlic, onion, ginger, avaalu, zilakara, menthulu, vazha, and several other spices in our kitchen, with RIGHT combinations and CORRECT proportions, depending on the dominance of "vaatha", "pittha" or "Kapha" doshas. The same spices, when consumed in incorrect combinations will lead to diseases, where as using them with deep understanding of the internal body parts and doshas at the time of illness with right quantities and proportions heals the diseases.

In the same manner, some one says, it is hard to believe that entire temple building is nothing but simulation of human body in subtler dimensions, which is directly related to "breath" or "prana" or "pranam" using Vedic/chanting rituals.

Even, the deeper sides of Spiritual sessions involve around  "pravachanams" from great saintly people also indirectly connected to "breath". It is hard to believe that all the pravachanams are just nothing but the descriptions or documentation of human body, we all carry around,  in a different language with a combination of Sanskrit poetry and its explanation. If we think that they are talking about  the "god" sitting some where else,  we may not be interested. Not at all. They are explaining how "breath" is moving in our body  in a different language. Hence, the entire ancient spirituality revolves around our own human body. It is just that we became too busy in observing the external intelligent bodies like Iphones, Ipads, self driving cars, GPS,  and totally forgot about the intelligence of THIS body we are carrying around.  The magic of ancient Indian spirituality, whether it is about pravahanams, ayurvedam, yoga, vedas, or Geetha,it is all about you and me, our human body(hardware), software(mind), and electricity(breath). It has become norm for most of the Youth, that they could start learning about "Yoga" or "Ayurvedam" after retirement or late 50s.  To know about own body, our own mind, and our own breath, we have to wait until the retirement?  Isn't a great opportunity to learn more about the body, mind and breath when we are young and very active? In ancient Guru Kulas or schools or any form of education, what all the Gurus taught in entire Indian Schooling system was about "body", "mind" and "breath". Only lately, our Indian schooling system got switched to learn some thing about making a "living" or for making food.  Making a meal or shelter was not at all the main/core part of "ancient" guru kula type of schooling system.  We probably have learnt a lot about external hardware of Ipads, Laptops, Medical equipment,  and it is time to look into this body by using different set of "SOFTer" tools invented by Yogis thousands of years ago .  Thousands of Americans are admiring the depth of Eastern Spirituality compared to the material world they are in.

Most of the AP NRIs  in America could be physicians and software engineers. It is extremely happy to note that more than half of the Indian software programmers in USA  could be from AP. This is a major accomplishment for AP, because our younger generation are willing to learn the newer technologies very fast and obtain the professional experience  in matter of months. As we noted earlier, we lost the touch of Yoga and Ayurvedam during the last 40 years. And, we strongly believe that, once a small group of our younger generations taste the power of Yoga and Ayurvedam, then it is no brainer that test of the AP NRIs would follow the suite immediately.

Maa TV and several other  Telugu TV channels are doing a great job in trying to bring the ancient culture back to Telugu speaking people around the world  by having more than 4 to 5 hours of programs focused around ancient spirituality. For example, Maa TV broadcasts Dr. Manthena's Yoga and "Mee Aarokgyam Mee Chethilo" sessions, Shri Chinna Jeeyer Swamy's Suprabatham,  Shri Chaganty's pravachanam,  Dr. Elchuri's Ayurvedam sessions,  and several other spirituality related sessions  daily morning. This is a major contribution from the TV industry. Hundreds of thousands of Telugu Speaking NRIs have subscribed to the Telugu TV channels and following Dr. Elchuri's Ayurvedam, and Dr. Manthena's Yoga and "Mee Arogyam Mee Chethilo" session.

The American Telugu Association's bi-annual event in Atlanta is just less than 30 days away. The spiritual committee had invited several honorable spiritual speakers with command and knowledge in various areas of Indian Spirituality.  It is our goal that our younger generation will spare few hours to learn more about ancient Spirituality in little depth, so that they can direct their children being brought up in America in the right direction. It is our goal, our children will pick up all the  business ideas from the WEST and Spirituality or quest for knowing the deepest of human body from the EAST. This could be a true meaning of "East" meets "West". When you attend ATA 2012 event in Atlanta, please take few minutes to sit through various sessions of "Ancient Spiriturality", such as "Pravachanams", Yoga, Ayurvedha, Geetha or Meditation and get some idea in that area, so that you can benefit from them directly and also you will be able to assist your family members and children.
